Waipunarangi is one of the stars of the Matariki cluster. Waipunarangi translates to “water that pools in the sky” and the star connects Mataraki to the rain. Waipunarangi would determine the nature of the rain for the upcoming year. Roimata are named for their teardrop shape and hold a strong connection to the land.
This piece is part of our Matariki Collection and will be on exhibit in our Rotorua studio until 11th July 2021. You can reserve (pre-purchase) this limited-edition carving online, and it will be shipped to you as soon as the exhibition is finished. Included, is the framed original artwork, signed by Tamaora Walker. The photo frame is (23cm h x 18cm w).
This piece was designed by Tamaora Walker and carved by Akapita Scally, and crafted from New Zealand pounamu.





The artist behind this creationFuelled by the love of seeing his ideas come to life in pounamu, Akapita Scally carefully considers design flow and significance when creating his signature pieces known for their meticulous finish and radiating beauty.
As a part of Rotorua’s carving industry for the past decade, Aka has had the privilege of working alongside some of the town’s finest pounamu artists. His designs are notable for their perfect lines and exemplary finishing, and he is particularly skilled at reflecting traditional forms whilst pushing contemporary boundaries.
Akapita is from Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whakaue and Ngāti Rangitihi.
