In the dance of the Tirairaka, the fantail flits through shadow and light, a restless spirit weaving stories on the wind. Ancient whispers take flight, rising from the whenua, carried on wings that remember every river bend, every hidden spring, every name spoken before the world grew loud.
"Ancient Whispers" by Tamaora Walker, was the recipient of the Highly Commended Award at the Rotorua Museum Art Awards 2026.

Carved by Tamaora Walker in Pounamu's eternal embrace, the stone holds the bird mid-motion, the heart of the land made solid, the quiet promise that nothing truly sacred is ever lost.

The artist behind this creationPerhaps it’s a trick of the light that lends translucence to Tamaora’s work. Or maybe this glow is evidence of an ancient Māori belief that pounamu lives and breathes. Tamaora regards pounamu with reverence and respect born of his Māori heritage, with traditional forms and symbolism deeply influencing his designs. Tamaora is from Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whakaue and Ngāti Rangitihi.
He has also exhibited overseas and studied the work of international carvers.
