This tūī is one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable native birds. Known for its glossy dark plumage and distinctive white throat tufts, the tūī is an accomplished songbird, with a complex range of calls and the ability to mimic other sounds.
Tūī play an important role in the ngahere, feeding on nectar, fruit and insects while pollinating native plants and dispersing seeds. Within Māori culture, the tūī is associated with communication and oratory, reflecting the importance of kōrero and the spoken word.

Exclusive to Mountain Jade, this one-off art piece forms part of the 2026 Ngā Tamariki-a-Tāne-Mahuta Collection, celebrating the beauty and character of Aotearoa’s native birds through pounamu and contemporary carving. This collection will be on display in our Rotorua store from Thursday 1st October. The artist behind this creationFuelled by the love of seeing his ideas come to life in pounamu, Akapita Scally carefully considers design flow and significance when creating his signature pieces known for their meticulous finish and radiating beauty.
As a part of Rotorua’s carving industry for the past decade, Aka has had the privilege of working alongside some of the town’s finest pounamu artists. His designs are notable for their perfect lines and exemplary finishing, and he is particularly skilled at reflecting traditional forms whilst pushing contemporary boundaries.
Akapita is from Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whakaue and Ngāti Rangitihi.
