Traditionally the Whai (stingray) was known as a kaitiaki (guardian) of the ocean, and when people followed the right tikanga (principles) the stingray would ensure the ocean was abundant with shellfish. This stingray carving represents maneuverability, highlighting our ability to navigate the many different paths we have to take in life while blending into the environment to create peace and harmony.

New Zealand Pounamu designs, inspired by nature
Our greenstone nature designs are a homage to the art, design, and culture of New Zealand. They are inspired by our great ocean, native birdlife and the New Zealand forest including Ferns, which are an iconic symbol of Aotearoa.
Tim Steel
The artist behind this creationFor as long as he can remember, Tim has been drawn to stone. From childhood, where he spent time exploring and collecting stones at Pukerua Bay, to adulthood, when he left his full-time job to pursue sculpting. Honing his craft at art school before working with greywacke and benchtop, Tim soon discovered jade; a moment that saw his passion for stonework and creative potential take form.
