The artist behind this creationDonna Summers embarked on her jade carving journey in 2019 after being encouraged by artist Ric Moor, her mentor and fellow carver. After spending four years at the prestigious Whitecliff College of Arts and Design, her passion for detail and love of the arts made the transition to jade carving a natural progression.

The ocean is deeply rooted in Māori worldview and culture and thought by many as the foundation of all life. Protected by the gods, it is a source of food and a place of ritual and spiritual connection, steeped in legend and stories telling of the creation of Aotearoa.
