This pendant combines the spiral or koru in Māori, and the fish - or hei matau - together to create a truly one-off piece. The hei matau is said to bring safe passage over water, and therefore makes the perfect gift for anyone who loves the water or is travelling. The spiral is said to represent growth and new beginnings. This Mountain Jade pendant is carved out of New Zealand flower jade, or pounamu.

Artist Profile

Story

Maori flourished in early New Zealand with bounty from the sea. They used the fish hook to catch seafood, but over time it slowly became regarded as more than just a tool. The integral role it played in their survival was seen as a blessing, and it became a talisman worn around the neck on a cord symbolising their relationship with the sea god Tangaroa. Today, wearing a fish hook shows a deep respect for the ocean and is said to provide safe travel over Tangaroas domain, the sea.
